Secondary packaging refers to the grouping of already primary packaged products (primary packaging is the first level of packaging, the one that comes in direct contact with the product).

Because of this, secondary packaging differs from primary, although the two may be considered as complementary to each other.

Secondary packaging has two main functions:

• Brand promotion, especially when it comes to promotional packaging e.g. for the retail sector.
• Transport through the supply chain, since it refers to groups of products.

Therefore it should:

• Contain relatively large volumes of goods
• Provide safety during transport
• Keep primary packaging in its original condition
